Our Club’s History

From humble beginnings

The UWA Water Polo Club is an evolution of the City Beach Water Polo Club

City Beach Water Polo Club became the UWA City Beach Water Polo Club at a special general meeting on Saturday the 17th of October 2015. The City Beach title was dropped from the name during the 2018-2019 season.

The City Beach Water Polo Club was formed by the amalgamation of two former clubs, Rangers and Flotsam.

Both clubs had been in existence for only a short period and the decision to amalgamate was made for the mutual benefit of both clubs. Major reasons attributed to the amalgamation were to have a district orientated name, to promote junior water polo and to pool the resources of both clubs to form a strong and successful club of the future.

The first Annual General Meeting was held in May 1979

The following people were elected to positions on the management committee:

President Stephen OKeefe, Vice President Allan Marsh, Secretary Christopher Edwards, Treasurer Alan Boys, Registrar Rick Wolozny, Club Captain Peter Hughes, Ladies Captain Karen Wolozny, Social Chairman William Ramsay, Publicity Officer Joel Sangster.

Also at the AGM the club colours of Red, White and Black were selected.

At a later meeting in the year the club logo, The Polo Bear was adopted.

Many of the original 138 members of the club are still playing water polo for the club coming into it’s 40th season.

A book commemorating the History of the City Beach Water Polo Club from 1979 to 2018 was launched at a celebration dinner on Saturday 20 October 2018.
